    Profile

Located at the centre of Canada’s beautiful Niagara Peninsula in St. Catharines, Ontario, Brock University was opened in 1964 and named for Maj.-General Sir Isaac Brock, who lost his life at Queenston Heights in the War of 1812. His last words were said to be, “Surgite! Push on!” which has become the university’s motto.

The university offers strong undergraduate, graduate and interdisciplinary degree programs that include co-op and other experiential learning opportunities to a student population of more than 17,000. The university’s six faculties – Applied Health Sciences, Business, Education, Humanities, Mathematics and Science, and Social Sciences – provide a supportive student-focused and learning-centred environment. Students can expect the close, personal attention of a dedicated faculty and the opportunity to explore their academic interest through participation in seminars and labs.

Brock University graduates continue to enjoy one of the highest employment rates of all Ontario universities
at 96.5 percent. Brock celebrates the success of its 50,000 graduates who apply their degrees to careers throughout Canada and around the world. The university, long recognized for its high quality undergraduate education, is expanding post-graduate education in an increasingly wide range of areas. At the same time, Brock is intensifying research and scholarship and expanding international academic linkages to integrate a global perspective into teaching, learning and research.

To meet an increasing demand for a Brock education, more than $87 million in construction has been committed or commissioned to expand the campus. Over the last few years, the university completed construction of academic buildings, the Walker Complex – which is Niagara’s largest recreational facility, and student residences. A $22.6 million facility to house a new bookstore, provide additional academic space and house the Lifespan Development Research Centre, a facility unique in Canada, will be completed in 2007.

Brock serves the Niagara region as a cultural, academic and recreational centre and offers the community excellent facilities for people of all ages. The university’s annual economic impact on the Niagara region is $265 million.

The Brock campus is a safe and friendly environment. The park-like setting of the university, with its wide-open spaces, offers a number of outdoor activities at any time of year. Brock University is the only Canadian university with the distinction of being part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The university also operates a campus in Hamilton, Ontario, that is used primarily for teacher education.

    Housing
On-campus: Brock accommodates approximately 2,400 students in two styles of residences: traditional
style (1,200 beds) and townhouses (1,200 beds). Students living in the traditional-style residences are accommodated in “halls” or “houses” with 40-60 other students: all must purchase a meal plan. Those living in townhouses share a “unit” with two, three or four other students (meal plans are optional). Single and double rooms are in both styles of residences.

Residence is guaranteed to incoming year one students (some conditions apply). Some beds are available for upper-year and graduate students. For those with special needs, documentation and communication with the Department of Residences and Services for Students with Disabilities Office is required prior to application deadlines.

Range of cost for 2006-07 academic year: traditional- style residences including mandatory meal plan: $6,945 to $8,755; townhouse residences: $4,465 to $5,565. There are several food service facilities on campus, including two residence dining halls and a variety of retail outlets.

Off-campus: The Off-campus Housing Services provides information and materials to assist students in their search for accommodations off campus. Listings of available accommodations are available on the OCHS website along with a wealth of other information relating to off-campus living. Additionally, if students have questions about the Tenant Protection Act, leases or municipal bylaws, the OCHS staff can help to find the answers and available resources. The office also operates an informal housing mediation service, providing student tenants, landlords and residents a forum where they can discuss with a neutral third party those concerns that may arise.

    Information technology
All students have full access to both e-mail and the Internet through on-campus computer labs or using their own laptop on Brock’s wireless network. Campus residences are equipped for high-speed Internet access as well as cable TV. There are numerous technology-enhanced Smart Classrooms which support the integration of a wide range of multimedia into lectures and presentations. All students have access to computer support in the Computer Commons or the ITS Help Desk.

    Student assistance
Undergraduate: Brock offers $14,000 entrance scholarships ($3,500 in each year) to students with admission averages of 93 per cent or higher; $8,000 scholarships ($2,000 in each year) to those with 90 to 92.9 per cent admission averages. From 85 to 89.9 per cent, students receive $4,000 ($1,000 in each year) and from 80 to 84.9 percent, students receive $2,500 ($1,000 in year one, $500 in each of the next three years). Brock also offers special entrance awards for graduates from international baccalaureate programs. Brock has numerous bursaries and participates in the ExperienceWorks program, which offers part-time jobs to students to help them meet their costs while gaining valuable work experience. Please visit our website for a complete list of all of Brock’s scholarships and awards programs – www.brocku.ca/studentawards.

Graduate: Brock University provides funding for graduate students in the form of fellowships, bursaries, and graduate teaching and research assistantships and awards to full-time incoming and returning students. The financial funding information varies depending on the department and faculty. Information, definitions and sample funding package information can be found at: www.brocku.ca/gradstudies/financial. Students are encouraged to check the graduate studies website: http://www.brocku.ca/gradstudies/fin...ips_awards.php for scholarship and award competition dates and applications.

    University research

The people who work and study at Brock are critical to the university’s progress in research. To that end, Brock invests in people – faculty members, undergraduate and graduate students, and research support personnel in laboratories, studios, and the Research Office. In recent years, sponsored research funding has grown substantially, allowing Brock to attract outstanding scientists and scholars, including eight Canada Research Chairs. External funds have facilitated the expansion of the research infrastructure, including the construction of the world-renowned Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute and the Lifespan Development Research Centre. External grants attracted by researchers support undergraduate and graduate students as research assistants who are mentored by our faculty members. This growth in funding demonstrates confidence in our faculty’s ability to lead the innovation process in the Niagara region. Brock truly is at the core of the innovation agenda for Niagara – innovation in the arts, social sciences, business, education, health, and applied science.

    International education

Brock values internationalization; we welcome the world’s ideas and cultures, thereby creating a dynamic interaction with our own. A significant part of this process is performed by international students coming to Brock and by Canadian students going abroad on student exchange programs.

Brock administers exchange programs with universities on six continents, and we are involved in 35 formal, active exchange agreements. While our exchanges are one- or two-term placements, Brock also offers short-term international education experiences. Students can travel abroad to obtain individual courses within our numerous service learning programs.

Brock is also home to more than 1,000 international students from over 80 countries. International students
are encouraged to participate and become involved in both campus and community life. An International Student Work/Study Program exists, allowing for many international students to gain valuable on-campus work experience.
