    Profile

Situated at the western end of Lake St. Clair, on the Detroit River, the University of Windsor is Canada’s southernmost university. This strategic location on the Canada-U.S. border at the centre of the Great Lakes – in the manufacturing heartland of North America – provides a special focus for academic and research initiatives in such areas as the environment, the automotive sector, and in social justice.

The university’s roots go back to the founding, in 1857, of Assumption College, from which it has evolved into a comprehensive, mid-sized university offering a broad range of undergraduate, graduate, cooperative education and professional programs.

The university is a leader in innovative partnerships with business and industry. These include the multi-million dollar University of Windsor/Chrysler Canada Ltd. Automotive Research and Development Centre, the only research facility of its kind in North America, and a unique agreement with the Ambassador Duty-Free Store, at Canada’s busiest border crossing, which provides student jobs, 400 parking spaces, and an annual cash annuity.

New computer-based multimedia instructional technologies at Windsor are expanding access, and enhancing the learning environment.

The university has a high proportion of part-time students and is committed to meeting the lifelong learning needs of today’s adults through a range of part-time programs, workshops and innovative distance delivery methods.

    University research

The University of Windsor’s Strategic Research Plan identifies three themes – automotive, environmental and social justice. With this choice we have devoted space and human resources to build a critical mass of research activity that will contribute to our regional and national economic health and social welfare. Some of Windsor’s research centres are: Automotive Research and Development Center, Center for Automotive Research and Education, International Truck and Engine Center, Centre for Catalysis and Materials Research, Center for Clean Diesel, Center for Research in Reasoning, Argumentation and Rhetoric, and Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research. In order to encourage students to conduct research, the university offers senior research projects, summer research assistantships, assistance to faculty members in getting internal and external grants, several new attractive scholarships for graduate students. Researchers are drawn to Windsor for its hands-on experience in solving real-world problems, easy access to faculty members and other researchers as mentors, and new programs in the area of automotive engineering.

    International education

The University of Windsor is expanding overseas educational experiences for students. New exchange partnerships are developing, particularly for business students, and awareness of and interest in exchange opportunities are increasing. This year we have added a third and fourth partner school in Australia. The Odette School of Business has introduced an undergraduate International Business program which will require intensive language study (French or Spanish) and two semesters of overseas study using the second language.

We currently have 34 exchange partner schools in 13 countries, some through consortia; some of our partners facilitate overseas cooperative education work terms. Some of our most popular exchanges are: Jönköping University (Sweden); Victoria University (Australia); University of Wales, Swansea; and the International Christian University (Japan).

Our Centre for Career Education office has long-standing work-term partners in Germany and Switzerland, where students can work in English. International students in co-op programs often return to their home countries for placements.

Windsor has a higher proportion of international students than most Canadian universities; currently 10 percent of our student body are in this category. Our Windsor International Student Employment program facilitates on-campus employment for this group.
