    Profile

The University of Calgary is a dynamic research and teaching institution of growing national and international stature, with 16 faculties, 53 departments, and more than 30 research institutes and centres. U of C offers programs in a number of traditional and multidisciplinary fields leading to undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and professional degrees. U of C maintains close ties to the city of Calgary, Canada’s energy capital and fastest growing city.

Every year, almost 29,000 students (full-time equivalent) are attracted to the U of C from across Canada and about 85 other countries. The university offers significant support to undergraduate students, with 9,746 students receiving $10.5 million in scholarships and bursaries through the U of C.

With external research funding totalling $252 million, the U of C is one of Canada’s leading research universities. The U of C houses several institutes, centres and groups investigating a wide variety of topics within the thematic areas of energy and the environment; human behaviour, institutions and cultures; technologies and information; and health and wellness.

The 213-hectare campus is designed for pedestrians, with extensive landscaping and green spaces. The main campus has more than 30 buildings – all interconnected by enclosed walkways. The campus also has a modern students’ union building, a museum and art gallery, several performance areas, a child care centre and residences for both single students and those with families. All student spaces are wireless, including The Loft, a newly-created cyber café.

The U of C’s excellent athletic facilities include one of the world’s finest indoor speed skating ovals, a large fitness centre, hockey rinks, tennis and racquetball courts, sports fields, and swimming pool.

A recently announced $1.5-billion capital strategy includes four cornerstone projects: the Campus Calgary Digital Library; the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy; the Experiential Learning Centre and the Urban Campus.

    University research

As one of Canada’s leading research universities, innovation, discovery and learning are at the heart of all that we do. Students and researchers, working with the community and across disciplines, solve problems, discover new ideas and anticipate the future needs of society. We have a relentless pursuit of quality in our teaching and research programs and are guided by our mission to contribute to the well-being of the people of Alberta, Canada and the world.

Supporting this community and cross-disciplinary emphasis are the soon to open Child Development Centre and the four main components of the recently announced $1.5 billion capital expansion: the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy; the Campus Calgary Digital Library; the Experiential Learning Centre and the Urban Campus.

    International education

The University of Calgary has more than 170 exchange agreements with universities and institutions around the world. The university also offers a number of Group Study Programs during the regular academic terms and shorter programs in Spring and Summer. Other international opportunities include various field schools and opportunities that allow students in bachelors degree programs to participate in cooperative education, internships, and practicums which combine academic studies with work experience abroad. A significant international dimension is integrated into all undergraduate programs. Dr. Fok Ying Tung International House, an international residence for students and visiting scholars, is scheduled to open in 2008.
