    Profile

Founded in 1821 with a bequest by Montreal merchant James McGill, the university has earned an international reputation for scholarly achievement and scientific discovery. Cutting-edge facilities and innovative research programs attract internationally respected teachers and researchers and first-class students.

McGill’s 21 faculties and professional schools offer degrees in more than 300 disciplines. McGill is one of Canada’s most research-intensive universities when measured in terms of competitive research funding dollars per professor. Researchers at McGill are affiliated with about 75 major research centres and networks, and are engaged in an extensive array of research partnerships with other universities, government and industry in Quebec and Canada, throughout North America and in dozens of other countries. The university has four affiliated teaching hospitals, including the McGill University Health Centre’s multi-site network, several remote research stations, a network of 16 libraries, and a number of major museum collections and ecological treasures, including the 250 hectare Morgan Arboretum, the largest in Canada.

McGill’s main campus, a mosaic of heritage and modern buildings in an oasis of green space, is set in Montreal’s vibrant downtown core with Mount Royal as a backdrop. A short drive west of downtown, the Macdonald Campus occupies 650 hectares of woods and fields on the shores of Lac St-Louis, providing unique opportunities for fieldwork and research activities.

With almost 20 per cent of its students coming from 140 countries around the globe, McGill has the most internationally diverse student body of any medical/doctoral university in Canada. It offers its students unparalleled opportunities to enrich their educational experience through hands-on research programs, exchange programs, internships, field study and study abroad programs. The university recognizes and honours academic distinction and leadership qualities through an extensive program of entrance awards and scholarships. It provides more than $10 million a year in undergraduate scholarships and student aid.

On-campus: McGill has both traditional and alternative residences in downtown Montreal that collectively house approximately 2,201 undergraduate students. The traditional residences offer dormitory-style accommodation with full meal service provided by four cafeterias. Four co-ed residences are located on the slope of Mount Royal, overlooking the campus. A fifth is a converted high-rise hotel close to campus. One all-women’s residence, Royal Victoria College, is located by the lower campus. Annual cost: $8,298 - $11,104 per academic year.

McGill’s alternative residences include one apartment building, within a few blocks of the main campus, with
fully equipped single and double occupancy apartments; a number of beautifully renovated older houses that offer single and double occupancy bedrooms with shared kitchens and common areas; and Solin Hall, an award-winning factory conversion located just four short Metro stops west of the main campus, with two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments, large common areas and a computer lab. Annual cost: $5,054 - $8,338 (11-month lease, no meal plan).

Residence accommodation is guaranteed to newly admitted undergraduate students who are starting their first year of university studies, are admitted to the university by June 15, and who are 22 years of age or under. First-year undergraduate students of any age who receive major renewable entrance scholarships are further guaranteed that they will be assigned to the residence hall of their choice. All other residence rooms are assigned by lottery.

Off-campus: The downtown campus is centrally located on major subway and bus routes and in walking distance of many apartments. McGill Off-Campus Housing service publishes lists of apartments for rent, apartments to share, and rooms for rent in private homes in the vicinity of the downtown campus and close to major bus and metro lines. Monthly rental ranges from shared rates for $350+, to three bedrooms or larger for- $1,200+.

No meal plan is available. Annual cost: traditional residence, $2,400 - $2,680; apartment-style residence EcoResidence, $3,024 - $3,200; both per academic year.

    Information technology
Students use McGill’s IST services from the moment they apply to McGill, using the online McGill Web System. All students receive e-mail addresses and free storage (100 MB e-mail quota, plus 100 MB of file space) when they register. They use the Minerva system (the self-service, web-based student system, see www.mcgill.ca/minerva) throughout their student life for tasks such as registration, paying bills, and financial aid applications. They have wireless access to the McGill network and the Internet on both McGill campuses (downtown and Macdonald). A Learning Management System (WebCT Vista) is used in most courses. The student portal, myMcGill, provides a single web entry-point for students to many of the systems that they will use day-to-day (for example, e-mail, Minerva, WebCT Vista). A helpline and virtual helpdesk provide
IST user support to students. On campus computer labs in many Faculties as well as hundreds of desktop computers in the Libraries provide free access to McGill resources and the Internet. IST services (see “IT at McGill” at www.mcgill.ca/it) are constantly evolving to provide new and improved services to support McGill’s students and the academic mission.

    Student assistance
Undergraduate: McGill’s entrance and in-course scholarship program is open to students from across Canada and throughout the world. Qualified students are eligible for approximately 600 renewable entrance scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $10,000 and 1,500 continuing scholarships of up to $5,000. For 2006-2007, 274 students, or about eight percent of full-time first-year students, were awarded entrance scholarships. McGill’s entrance bursary program is open to all undergraduate students.
